Enzyme exfoliants are changing the skincare game. Enzymes are bio-active ingredients often derived from fruits like pineapple and papaya. Suitable for all skin types, enzyme exfoliants are especially suited to sensitive skins that react to granular or acidic exfoliators.
What is an Exfoliant?
An exfoliant is a product which helps detach the outer layers of the skin, removing trapped debris and clearing the way for oils (Sebum) to flow naturally. Enzymatic exfoliation is a plant active based therapy.
Exfoliation is an important tool against rough and dull skin. As well, removing the outer layer of dead skin cells allows the skin’s natural oils(Sebum) to flow properly, this is probably the main cause of dry skin. Also, dead cell proteins will clog the pores increasing the chance of breakouts and acne. Another strong reason to exfoliate regularly is to help your skin care products penetrate better for improved results. Makes sense that if there is a layer of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin then the products will not get through as easy. You will notice a difference in how your products apply, even makeup is smoother and adheres better.
What’s an Enzyme Exfoliant?
Enzymes are proteins which perform a specific job. The enzymes used for exfoliation in skincare are protease (or proteolytic) enzymes, which break down other proteins, including those keeping your older, outer layers of skin stuck on. In particular, they’ll usually be bromelain (from pineapple, often listed as Ananas Cosmosus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract), papain (from papaya, often listed as Carica Papaya Fruit Extract), pumpkin enzyme (listed as Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin)) or Bacillus bacteria.
Interesting Note: Ever wonder why Pineapple and Papaya make great meat tenderizers? They break down the protein which makes the meat more tender. No canned fruit though, the heating process destroys the enzymes.
Benefits of Enzymatic Exfoliation
Enzymes work differently from other exfoliants and they have added benefits too. Firstly, enzyme exfoliation is gentler than mechanical (dermabrasion and scrubs) and AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids). Effective results can be achieved using a subtle approach, aggressive mechanical exfoliation and other invasive treatments can do as much damage as the results they provide. DMK does not recommend mechanical exfoliation (too damaging to the skin) but sometimes you need the added power of AHAs to deal with a specific condition. A lot of the time though enzymatic exfoliation is sufficient and can be performed regularly as a maintenance routine without stressing the skin. Also, enzyme extracts have anti-inflammatory properties, which can make them particularly good for sensitive skin.
The most interesting and beneficial benefit of enzymes is that they work at a deeper level to change the properties of the skin. Changes in skin smoothness and texture, the depth and number of lines and wrinkles, and epidermal and dermal firmness and thickness are improved with consistent use of enzymes. A study found that treatment with a 15% enzyme product(s) resulted in significant improvement in epidermal properties after 1 month and both epidermal and dermal properties after 3 months. These naturally beneficial enzyme properties are the basis for many of the DMK treatments and products, including DMK’s Signature Enzyme Therapy.
